Banned Images. Cinema and Literature in the Iberian Peninsula – 20th and 21st Century” will hold its 1st biennial International Symposium, organized by the CEC — Centro de Estudos Comparatistas, School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon, in collaboration with the IHA — Instituto de História da Arte, IHC — Institute of Contemporary History and CHAM — Centro de Humanidades, from the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, from 1-3 April 2020. The conference will take place at the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon (Lisbon, Portugal).

Confirmed keynote speakers include the Professors Josefina Martinez Alvarez (UNED – Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia) and Ana Cabrera (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa).

 

 

Call for papers

 

You are cordially invited to offer a paper, panel, or workshop presentation. Proposals for individual papers as well as panels on specific themes (max. three papers per panel) are encouraged. Proposals will be accepted in any of the following languages: English, Spanish or Portuguese. Any proposed panel should be organised by one convenor who will be responsible for inviting the speakers and chairing the session.

Below are the suggested thematic areas for papers and panels, which must advance understanding of censorship at contemporary Cinema and Literature and relate primarily to Spain and/or Portugal and transnational issues and processes relating to the Iberian Peninsula within the wider Lusophone and Hispanic worlds. Both single-disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives are encouraged and the themes listed below are not exclusive:

* Book Adaptations for Cinema and VS
* Cinema
* Visual Arts
* Visual Poems
* Literature and press
* Graphic Novels
* Pictures / Images in Books
* Pictures / Images in School Books
* Cartoons
* Posters
* Book as an Art Object

– Self-Censorship in Film and Literature
– Aesthetic Conditioning
– Public Financing and Censorship

The selection of panels/papers will be made by the Conference programme convenors and these decisions will be final. Papers will be allocated 30 minutes on the programme (20 mins for the paper 10 mins for discussion).

If you wish to offer a paper, please see the Guidelines for Papers (below) and send your proposal to the Banned Images Programme Convenors at the email address imagensinterditas@gmail.com by 5 January 2020. Informal enquiries concerning papers and topics are welcome before the deadlines.

Conference fees: Early bird payments are accepted from the acceptance of the proposal until 1 February 2020.
