FLORIDA HISTORICAL SOCIETY  Annual Meeting and Symposium at Sea  May 16–23, 2020  

 On board the Carnival Cruise Ship Breeze

Theme:  “Florida and The Caribbean: Cultural and Historical Connections”

 EARLY DEADLINE: January 15, 2020

 The Society will hold its annual conference on board the cruise ship Breeze, sailing round trip from Port Canaveral to Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Grand Turk Island, Turks and Caicos. The conference program includes two keynote speakers and papers and panels by submission. Session space is limited, so please submit proposals by January 15, 2020. Decisions about inclusion will be made ASAP to ensure participants’ reservations on the Carnival Breeze. Cost for the cruise conference begins at just $1,175.00 per person, which includes the cruise, meals, featured tours, symposium registration, taxes, fees, and port charges, if payment is made by January 31, 2020. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:   This year’s theme is “Florida and The Caribbean: Cultural and Historical Connections,” but papers, panels, and roundtable discussions on all topics in Florida history, archaeology, humanities, arts, and literature are welcome and will be considered. A committee of Society members will judge the proposed papers/sessions on their value as scholarship or other useful contributions to Florida studies. Presentations should follow the Statement on Standards of Professional Conduct by the American Historical Association.

 INDIVIDUAL PAPER (20 minutes): send a title, 150-word abstract, and one-page vitae. 

 THEME PANEL: send a title and 150-word theme description, 150-word abstract for each paper, one-page vitae for each panel member, and suggested discussant.

 ROUND TABLE FORUM OR DISCUSSION: send a title and 150-word topic description, list of the participants, and moderator/discussant, with vita.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR FHS AWARDS: The Society also will sponsor its annual awards for publications and scholarship. Submissions must be received by FHS by December 20, 2019, to be included in the judging.

 ATTENTION PROFESSORS AND STUDENTS!  FHS is initiating a new program to encourage student participation in the annual meeting. The Society will offer up to four awards to graduate students to present their scholarship at the annual meeting and symposium. Open to students enrolled at an accredited university or college, these awards are competitive and based on nominations from a student’s professors or other professionals or academics. Submissions will be judged by a panel of Society members. In addition to receiving an award to cover the cruise and conference registration, students also will be recognized in the meeting program and receive a Certificate of Achievement.
