“Without tradition, art is a flock of sheep without a shepherd. Without innovation, it is a corpse.”— Winston CHURCHILL (1874- 1965)

“Tradition is a challenge to innovation.”— Álvaro SIZA VIEIRA

“Tradition is important when it contains moments of change, when it is not just outward form and when it also implies an idea of what goes on inside a building, of conflicts and a potential for innovation. Otherwise, tradition just means being stuck in a rut.”— Alvaro SIZA VIEIRA

"Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought."— Albert von SZENT-GYORGY (1893- 1986)

“The very fact that a significant scientific novelty so often emerges simultaneously from several laboratories is an index both to the strongly traditional nature of normal science and to the completeness with which that traditional pursuit prepares the way for its own change.”― Thomas S. KUHN (1922- 1996)

“What is essential in a work of art is that it should rise far above the realm of personal life and speak from the spirit and heart of the poet as man to the spirit and heart of mankind.”― C. G. JUNG (1875- 1961)

"The worst walls are never the ones you find in your way. The worst walls are the ones you put there—you build yourself."― Ursula K. Le GUIN (1929- 2018)

The Centre for Research in Architecture, Urbanism and Design (CIAUD), Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon, in conjunction with the Centre for the Humanities (CHAM), Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, NOVA University of Lisbon and the Faculty of Architecture - University of Porto (FA-UP), invite researchers from different scientific fields and cultures to gather at Faculty of Architecture - University of Porto (FA-UP), October 8th to 10th2020, at the International and Multidisciplinary Congress PHI 2019, under the theme “TRADITION AND INNOVATION”

The Congress aims to bring together researchers from all scientific fields to explore and discuss the concepts of Tradition and Innovation. These are in constant dialectic and impact on every area of human activities. The fluid dynamics that Tradition and Innovation establish determine the form and timing of transformations in the way we perceive the world, one another, and ourselves. The balance and unbalance they originate, the debate of ideas the give rise to are essential to the evolution of knowledge, of societies and cultures. In a way, the two concepts may either reveal the potential future or become the origin of conflicts, embryos of revolutions.

The organizers of PHI 2020 thus launch a challenge to the scientific community, from all fields of research, to engage actively in a multidisciplinary discussion with the concepts “TRADITION AND INNOVATION” as core points.

Only full original articles, written in English (American spelling), will be accepted. All submitted papers MUST contain a reflection on one or more of the concepts listed above. Articles cannot have been submitted at similar conferences. Reproductions of previously published texts will be rejected.

All articles will be subjected to double-blind peer review, plus an assessment of linguistic adequacy, performed by language specialists, also in a “blind” system. Articles accepted after the triple evaluation will be included in a book, offered to participants on the first day of the Congress. The publication will be part of the PHI Series ( with an e-book version and available in a prestigious database.

Authors with approved articles will have to sign an authorization for publication in book and online, waiving the copyright, but maintaining the permission to make available the AM version (Accepted Manuscript) in open repositories.
