The Activist History Review invites proposals for our December issue: “Impeachment for Democracy.”

We often think of impeachment as a distant political process that plays out in the halls of Congress. Yet if we hope to enjoy a functional democracy, we must involve ourselves in its workings. As a growing body of research suggests, Congress responds almost exclusively to the desires of wealthy elites, all but ignoring the needs of working people. The result is a cannibalistic capitalism in which the rich disempower and devour poor and marginalized folks. If we allow elites in Congress and their private-sector financiers to control the process, we can only expect more of the same.

From this angle, impeachment represents an opportunity, not only to remove a kleptocratic demagogue, but to claim a true, egalitarian, participatory democracy for the people.

The Activist History Review seeks essays that address impeachment as a way of demanding popular sovereignty—an opportunity to leverage the survival-politics of protest and agitation to create a more equal society.

Potential topics include but are not limited to:

  • Protest movements and equality, past and present.
  • Left-liberal alliances, past and present—their shortcomings and benefits.
  • The relationship between disenfranchisement, incarceration, and minority rule.
  • Futurisms and egalitarian visions.
  • Reform or Revolution?

Proposals should be no more than 250 words for articles from 1250-2000 words, and should be emailed to horne.activisthistory@gmail.com by November 27th at 11:59 PM. Please also include a short bio of no more than 100 words.

** We will be offering a small stipend to contributors who are queer and/or trans Black Brown Indigenous People of Color (QTBBIPOC). Please indicate if you identify as such in your email. **
