University of Oklahoma - Norman, Department of Women’s and Gender Studies 


The University of Oklahoma invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the rank of associate or full professor. We are seeking a visionary leader to help facilitate strategic development in the areas of research, undergraduate curriculum, university programming, and community outreach. The Chair will be responsible for administrative leadership that promotes principles of shared faculty governance and a culture of diversity and inclusion; facilitates professional development of faculty, staff, and students; guides the work of the WGS Center for Social Justice (housed within WGS); and promotes disciplinary and interdisciplinary programming and innovation. The Chair will provide leadership in managing the day-to-day operational needs of the department including fiscal management; hiring and supervision of staff; evaluating faculty; and allocating facilities and equipment for teaching, research, and service activities. The individual we seek will have expertise in Women’s and Gender Studies and an integrated approach to research, teaching, and service. 


Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to establish and pursue an active research and publication agenda, teach two courses per year, oversee departmental and WGS Center for Social Justice programming, initiate and implement curricular change, and work with core faculty in WGS as well as a large and diverse group of affiliate faculty.


Department and University: The OU Department of Women’s and Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary program that offers a curriculum and programming that seeks to enhance students' knowledge of gender across cultures and history, and in STEM fields. WGS courses investigate the intersection of gender and such diverse phenomena as politics, religion, society, economics, war, communication, psychology, music, art, family life and popular culture. OU WGS currently has four core faculty members and a highly engaged group of nearly one hundred affiliate faculty from across campus. Because of its interdisciplinary nature, the department collaborates closely with multiple units across campus. The department offers a major in WGS and minors in WGS, Social Justice, and LGBTQ Studies, as well as a graduate certificate in WGS.

Required Qualifications: The successful candidate will possess a doctorate in Women’s and Gender Studies or another affiliated discipline conducive to leadership in Women’s and Gender Studies. The candidate should have a commitment to  research, teaching, and university and public service activities appropriate to the rank of associate or full professor at a research-intensive institution; a willingness and ability to work in a diverse environment with a range of students, faculty, administrators, and external constituents; as well as a demonstrated commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.   


Preferred Qualifications: Candidates with evidence of successful administrative leadership are preferred. Although the position is open to all areas of research and methodological specialization within Women’s and Gender Studies, we are particularly interested in scholars whose inquiry focuses on one or more of the following: women of color feminisms, decolonial feminism, intersectional feminism, critical race theory feminism, settler colonialism, sexuality studies, transnational feminism, disability studies, LGBTQ+, and queer theory.
