Society for the History of Women in the Americas, Annual Conference

CALL FOR PAPERS

University of Manchester, The Ellen Wilkinson Building

3 July 2020

The Society for the History of Women in the Americas (SHAW) welcomes proposals for its annual conference, at the University of Manchester.

Founded in 2009, SHAW is dedicated to the historical investigation of women and gender in North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean, either within or between nation states/ and or the northern or southern hemispheres. SHAW organizes annual conferences, monthly seminars at the Institute for Historical Research in London, and publishes a journal, History of Women in the Americas.

We invite 250 word abstracts for 20-minute presentations on any topic, geographical period, chronological time, or theme related to the history of women in the Americas. We also welcome comparative papers between two countries in the Americas or one in the Americas and a country outside the region.

As 2020 marks the centenary of women winning the vote in the United States, we welcome papers that engage with the history of suffrage and political rights among women in the United States and across the Americas.

The keynote lecture will be delivered by Associate Professor Tanya Harmer (London School of Economics and Political Science) about her current book project on Beatriz Allende.

The conference welcomes proposals from academics at any stage of their career, especially graduate students, as well as those active in civil society groups.  For full panels and roundtable discussions, please include descriptions of all papers proposed.

Please submit abstracts along with a 100-word biography of each proposed speaker to shawsociety@gmail.com, by 21st February 2020. We will confirm which papers are chosen by the 16th of March 2020.

Papers chosen for the conference may be selected for inclusion in a special issue of History of Women in the Americas journal subject to peer review.
