Proposals are now being sought for review in a new topic, “Global Cinemas”. We are interested in studies of
architecture, cinema-going behaviors, phenomenologies of space and viewing, Please direct questions
pertaining to this area to Janna Jones, Northern Arizona University janna.jones@nau.edu and/or Jennifer
Jenkins, University of Arizona, jenkinsj@email.arizona.edu. Topics for paper proposals include, but are not
limited to:

• Social and cultural histories of individual cinemas/theaters
• Architectural and design histories of individual cinemas/theaters
• Cinemas and segregation/ integration
• The meanings of darkness at the cinema
• Purpose-built or repurposed cinemas/theatres
• Cinema and cinema-going in rural communities
• Cinema and cinema-going in urban spaces
• Evolving social purposes of cinemas
• Methodological approaches to studying cinemas
• Public and private memory at the cinema
• Hollywood films at the remote cinema
• Youth and cinema-going
• Phenomenologies of viewing


Proposals of 200-500 words in lengths, including title, proposer name, and affiliation should be submitted by
October 31, 2019 to jenkinsj@email.arizona.edu,. Because this is a late-breaking topic, the confrence organizers
have asked us to form a panel and then submit it.
