Robert and Myra Kraft and Jacob Hiatt Chair in Christian Studies

Brandeis University, Near Eastern and Judaic Studies

Brandeis University invites applications to fill the Robert and Myra Kraft and Jacob Hiatt Chair in Christian Studies, starting July 1, 2020. This is an open-rank, permanent position in the School of Arts and Sciences to be housed in a department (or departments) appropriate to the candidate’s discipline and area of research. We especially encourage applications from scholars of early Christianity with a focus on the Eastern Mediterranean or on Coptic, Syriac, or Arabic-speaking Christians in the first millennium CE. Through this appointment, we aim to expand Classical Studies at Brandeis and to complement our existing course offerings in Mediterranean studies, early Islam, and early Judaism. (Classical Studies at Brandeis offers an MA and the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies houses PhD programs in Arabic and Islamic Civilization, Jewish Studies, and Bible and Ancient Near East.)

We seek candidates with a distinguished or promising publication record, recognized or potential leadership in the field, evidence of innovative and effective teaching, and expertise in relevant languages. The holder of the Chair will teach four courses a year, mentor graduate students, and participate in University activities. Applications will be considered at the rank of Full Professor, Associate Professor, or advanced Assistant Professor on the tenure track (for candidates with a demonstrated record of achievement and extraordinary promise).

Prospective candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, writing sample of approximately 30 pages, a course syllabus, and the names and e-mail addresses of three references via Academic Jobs Online at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/14739. The cover letter should address the applicant’s scholarly accomplishments, experience and philosophy of teaching, and projected research trajectory. First consideration will be given to applications received by Friday, October 25, 2019 and will continue until the position is filled.

Brandeis University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer committed to creating equitable access and opportunities for applicants to all employment positions. We strongly encourage applications from candidates belonging to historically underrepresented groups who, through their scholarly pursuits, teaching, and/or service experiences, can contribute to building, engaging, and sustaining a pluralistic, just, and inclusive campus community.
