The Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change, at the University of Memphis is accepting nominations for its 2019 Hooks National Book Award. The annual book award recognizes a non-fiction book that best furthers understanding of the American Civil Rights Movement and its legacy. Books focusing on current civil rights and social justice issues are eligible. To be considered for the 2019 award, books must have a first-published date in 2019. A panel of judges, representing various higher education disciplines, reviews the nominations and selects the winning publication.

An award of $1,000 is presented to the winning author at an award event at the University of Memphis in 2020. The winner must attend the event to accept the award and present a lecture about the book.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: Submit one copy of the nominated book along with publisher information and full contact information (name, email address, mailing address and phone number) for BOTH the nominator and the book author. The book and contact information should be sent to: Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change, University of Memphis, ATTN: Ms. Rorie Trammel, 107 Scates Hall, Memphis, TN 38152. Submissions must be postmarked no later than 12/31/19.
