Australia and the Global War
UNSW Canberra in conjunction with the Second World War Research Group’s Asia-Pacific Regional Group
10-11 September 2020
Keynote Speakers: Emeritus Professor David Horner AM (ANU) and Professor Christina Twomey (Monash)
To mark the 80th anniversary of the Second World War, UNSW Canberra, in conjunction with the Second World War Research Group’s Asia-Pacific Regional Group (SWWRG Asia-Pacific), intends hosting an annual symposium from 2020 to 2025.
The symposia aim to encourage scholarship in the Asia-Pacific region to present new perspectives on the Second World War.
In the introduction to her 1996 edited work Australia’s War, 1939-45, Joan Beaumont described the Second World War as the ‘dominant experience in Australian history.’ These symposia seek to consider Australia’s role in the war alongside the experience of its allies and enemies. The scope will be across all fields of study concerning the war and the societies involved in it. These include, but not limited to:
Politics and Alliances | Strategy | The Home Front and Mobilisation
Operations, Campaigns and Battles Navies, Armies, and Air Forces | Intelligence and Propaganda
Societal Issues | Economic Issues | Industry and Production
The first symposium will be held on 10 - 11 September 2020 on the theme ‘Australia and the Global War.’
UNSW Canberra and the SWWRG Asia-Pacific invite proposals for 25-minute presentations at the symposium. Proposals should include the title of the paper together with a 200-word synopsis of the topic and a brief speaker biography. These should be sent to: Brigadier Chris Roberts (UNSW Canberra) email@example.com and copied into Dr Karl James (Second World War, Asia-Pacific) firstname.lastname@example.org by Tuesday, 8 October 2019.
Acceptances of papers will be notified by no later than 30 October 2019.
