I co-wrote this essay on Puerto Rico as part of an effort led by Puerto Rican scholars and intellectuals to raise funds for community-based organizations in Puerto Rico. Each organization is engaged in grassroots emergency relief, including the distribution of food, water, water filters, and solar lamps.

Please share widely and consider donating. I know many of us have already contributed to relief efforts in one form or another. Yet conditions in Puerto Rico remain dire and in some regions are worsening. Any amount helps, even the cost of the proverbial cup of coffee.
