"If we want everything to remain as it is,everything must change" (The Leopard by Tomasi di Lampedusa) The Israeli Association for the Study of the History of Jews in Italy (ASSEI), in collaboration with the Israeli Historical Society, and the Goldstein-Goren Diaspora Research Center of Tel Aviv University, will hold an international conference on February 24, 2020 to celebrate its tenth anniversary. This conference is the fourth in a series of events organized by ASSEI. The conference will be held at Tel Aviv University, in room 496 of the Gilman Humanities Building. This year's theme will be: PERIODS OF TRANSITION The conference seeks to analyze the way in which Jews – particularly in Italy, but also in other places – have dealt with changes in society and culture by exploring the following topics: • The attitude of Halakha, intellectuals, the established authorities, or the general population to changes in their society and culture • How such cultural changes are expressed • Literature on epochal changes • The influences of these transitions Scholars who wish to participate are invited to send a title and abstract, as well as a brief CV, to: associazione.assei@gmail.com by October 31, 2019. Proposals will be evaluated by an academic committee. Conference proceedings will be published in Zakhor, an academic journal published in Rome.
