The Department of History at the UW-Madison invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure track) position in the History of Modern Germany (19th century to the present). The appointment will begin August 2020. Applicants must hold a doctorate in history or related field by the start of appointment and demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and scholarly research. The ideal candidate will actively engage in the intellectual life of our large history faculty with temporally, geographically, and methodologically diverse interests, as well as embrace departmental commitments to undergraduate and graduate education. The successful candidate will engage in significant ongoing research and publication and perform department, university and community services as appropriate for faculty rank.

Degree and area of specialization: Ph.D. in History or related field by start of appointment.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience: Must demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and scholarly research.

Principal Duties--The successful applicant will have the following expectations: Teach courses at all levels, including introductory courses, in the history of Germany and modern Europe, and to engage with the International Studies Major, the Center for European Studies, the George Mosse program, and other units as appropriate. Mentor students. Conduct scholarly research. Perform department, university and community services as appropriate for faculty rank.
