Institution: Manipal Centre for European Studies, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (Karnataka, India)

Overview:

India and EU are currently redefining their roles as actors within International relations. Amidst recent developments and challenges stemming from Brexit, European Sovereign Debt Crisis, and China’s Belt and Road Initiative, there is a pressing concern to accelerate India-EU cooperation to the next level. The potential gains of an effective partnership between the two are indubitable.

In recent years, growing convergence - between European and Indian counterparts on issues of promoting a rule-based international order, multilateral engagements, and stronger multipolar Asia - is much needed. Bilateral relations between India and respective EU member states have always stimulated multilateral relations between the two. Moreover, the sustainable two-way trade and investment relationship has also enabled an expansion in the political dimension of the partnership between Indian and European counterparts. A stronger India-EU partnership in the field of research and development as well as trade and investment could facilitate the realization of mutual objectives.

Another area of propitious cooperation, for both actors, has been in the field of higher education. Evidently, the last decade witnessed growing India-EU cooperation, in particular in this area. The EU has not only shown a keen interest but has rather emerged as a strong supporter of education in India. With the commencement of Erasmus program, India has become one of the largest beneficiaries. This has also led to a substantial increase in research collaborations between Indian and European higher education institutions in thrust areas.

In this connection, we invite participants including academicians, early-stage researchers, and doctoral, postgraduate and undergraduate students, to reflect on the various intricate dimensions of India-EU relations. The conference seeks to bring together a growing body of work in the area of European Union’s relations with India, with the intention of mainstreaming theoretical as well as methodological approaches to the topic. The slow, yet, anticipated cooperation between the two becomes a point of departure for researchers on both sides of the geographical spectrum to probe into the very intricacies that lie within them.

Topics include but are not limited to the following themes:

  • India-EU Trade Relations, Business Cooperation, Economic Cooperation
  • Cooperation in the field of Education: Higher Education, Primary and Secondary Education
  • Convergences and Challenges for EU and India: Politics, Energy, Security, Climate Change, Terrorism, Cyber-security, Science and Technology
  • India and EU: Cultural and Literary Engagements

We welcome proposals, including cross-thematic and inter-disciplinary papers concerning the above theme.
