Please mark your calendars to attend the twelfth annual Civil War Study Group (CWSG) symposium on Saturday, September 21, 2109. The Study Group will gather on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).
The CWSG presents new scholarship in a relaxed, informal, and collegial setting with an emphasis on friendly discussion. This year's theme is "The Common Soldier" in the Civil War. The following historians will present papers:
Kelly Mezurek, Walsh University, "The War against a 'Common' Black Soldier: Historians, Epistolary Evidence, and African American Civil War Experiences"
Christian McWhirter, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, "His Soul is Marching On: Emancipation and the Music of Civil War Soldiers"
Glenna Schroeder-Lein, Independent Scholar, "'Your work is truly a good one': Aiding the Civil War Soldier in Transit"
As well, Peter R. Carmichael of Gettysburg College will discuss his new book, The War for the Common Soldier: How Men Thought, Fought, and Survived in Civil War Armies (University of North Carolina Press, 2018). Participants are asked to read the book in advance and be prepared to discuss the book with the author.
Please send $25 to cover munchies and lunch costs to Stephen E. Towne by August 31. Make your checks payable to "IUPUI University Library."
