Many of Henry James's characters tend to dramatize the conventional contrast between Europe and America. The tragedy inherent in the American girl's innocence and lack of freedom inspired him and determined the creation of such characters as Isabel Archer. Isabel's naive faith that she can create a marriage for herself in which her life will be shaped by herself traces her into limited social existence. Her freedom is just an illusion, as she has an imperfect sense of the system rules and of her place as -woman within it.
