CFP: Mobilities in German Comics and Graphic Novels

Presiding Officer: Olivia Albiero (San Francisco State University)

This panel invites contributions on mobilities in comics and graphic novels from German-speaking cultures. Mobile experiences may include everyday practices, coming-of-age adventures, transnational travels, colonial expeditions, forced escapes, and homecomings. Papers that address works from different genres and periods, as well as by individual artists or collectives are welcome.

Some questions that papers may explore: What strategies do comics and graphic novels use to portray experiences that cross spaces and temporalities? How are different forms of encounters with people, places, and cultures represented? What larger issues do these comic works address, e.g. the search for identity, transgressions, forms of marginalization, new beginnings, the return to the past, the relation to immobilities?

Abstract Proposal Deadline: Monday, June 10
