The Department of History (Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar) and the Ceerno Sileymaani Baal Association organize an International Conference on March 24th, 25th and 26th 2020 dealing with CEERNO SILEYMAANI BAAL AND THE TOORODO REVOLUTION IN 1776 : CONTEXT, ACTORS AND SCOPE.
A great platform is therefore offered to researchers, academics and intellectuals to examine the context (political, historical and sociological), actors and scope of this significant event.
I.CONTEXT AND JUSTIFICATION
The Revolution that took place on the shores of the Senegalese River under the command of Ceerno Sileymaani Baal and his companions allowed to free the people of Fouta before setting a theocratic Muslim State. The constitutional principles of that state based on the fundamentals of human dignity, liberty, knowledge and justice met all the requirements that institute and organize a State ruled under the modern criteria of the "Rule of Law "and "Good Governance"
Are the Revolution and the State it bequeathed as an outcome sufficiently investigated, recognized and celebrated? Therefore academic questions have to be probed. How to review that historic sequence? What lessons can be drawn from that experience for African countries that often face challenges related to good-governance? How to capitalize the experience of the Toorodo Revolution of 1776 in the realm of Humanity?
These questionings certify that the experience of the Almamiyat, particularly the leadership of Ceerno Sileymaani Baal is worth revising at all levels. For example, even though earlier than the American and French Revolutions, The Toorodo Revolution is not adequately studied by Historiography. Accordingly, the International Conference offers a unique opportunity for researchers to dissect that major period in the rewriting of our history.
