Call for Papers:
31st Annual Cheikh Anta Diop International Conference

"Africana Holism & Agency: Exploring Healing and Wellness within Afrocentric Scholarship"

Abstracts due: Saturday, June 15, 2019

Contemporary global, political, and social climates demonstrate a want of culturally relevant solutions for persons of Africana descent. As the mission of the Diopian Institute for Scholarly Advancement is to inspire and promote Afrocentric scholarship for the betterment of African people, DISA repudiates the harm that anti-black racism, colonialism, imperialism, exploitative capitalism, state sponsored violence, stress, and other dehumanizing systems have inflicted on Africana people and their environments. We acknowledge that these systems aim to violate and destroy Africana people, culture, and heritage. We revere those who have come before us and fought for the survival and development of Africana people, and we want to continue their actions with strategies, theories, and rituals, which aim to maintain and heal the African self and community despite the violent onslaught.

By engaging in emancipatory scholarship that prioritizes culturally specific solutions, DISA invites presentations that conceptualize, interrogate, deconstruct, and report on issues of recovery, healing, trauma, and violence in spiritual, educational, social, political, physical, historical, and sexual contexts relevant to Africana people. We ask for scholars, educators, artists, and activists to present on issues such as interpersonal violence, educational trauma, environmental contamination, food inaccessibility, institutional racisms, victimization, abuse, maternal health, spiritual wellness, self-care, survival, resilience, liberation pedagogy, recovery rituals, victorious consciousness, homeplacing, exercise, diet, counseling, rememorization/memorialization, and other significant arenas of African life.

Papers should reflect the highest critical consciousness of Afrocentric and African-centered epistemologies of the discipline of Africana Studies. Participation is highly competitive.
