Global cities - Middle Eastern metropoles 2020.
In a context in which China finances the construction of the “new Cairo” and the Abu Dhabi government employ the British architect Foster and Partners to design Masdar city as a global icon of sustainable design, this conference queries the nature of the Islamic and Middle Eastern city in a global context.
What roles does religion, culture and social and historical traditions still play in the life and design of these cities? How is historical culture celebrated and supported in contemporary Islamic and Middle Eastern cities? What lessons does city life and culture in these regions offer the rest of the world?
These, and related questions will be made into a special stand of the conference:
