The City and History - Global Perspectives on how cites shape cultures
The way in which contemporary cities and cultures interact today is inseparable from the historical trajectory both have followed in tandem. This history is often one of conflict and contradiction.
Numerous Latin American cities remain dominated by the architectural heritage of the Spanish conquistadores. Similarly, the marks of the British Empire can be found around the globe in cities such as New Delhi or Lahore. The influence of the Soviet Empire remains evident from Berlin to Budapest. Today, China is leaving its print across Africa with perhaps the construction of ”New Cairo” being the most conspicuous example.
The ‘Complexity and the City’ conference seeks to explore how cultures and cities today are interwoven with theor past. It specifically seeks global persectives of the history of architecture and culture from a cross-disciplinary perspectve. It welcomes contributions from various fields:
Cultural theory, social history, urban design, architectural history, sociology and more.
