Presentation:
On 15 August 2019, Panama City would celebrate the 500th anniversary of its foundation. This event offers an opportunity to examine the processes that affected the internal aspects of its history, population, politics, culture, economics and geography. This commemoration also invites to reflect about the changes in the relations between Panama City and other cities and towns as well as with marginalized areas within the Republic of Panama. In addition, this occasion raises up the challenge of analysing the ways in which Panama City and its surroundings interacted with the rest of the world, whether collaborating or resisting multiple transnational and global forces.
The Host: University of Panama:
The University was founded in 1935, becoming the first official higher education institution of the Republic of Panama. It supervises the university level education in the whole country. Moreover, it is the most active in the international dialogue with other academic institutions from other countries. It has the largest number of students, faculty, and graduates in Panama, many of whom have occupied or currently occupy positions of political, social and intellectual leadership. For these reasons, the University of Panama’s impact on the Panamanian community prevails.
This also applies to its Faculty of Humanities and its Department of History, which coordinate the highest quantity of accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within its fields. Their professors work in research centres and groups, edit indexed and peer-reviewed academic books and journals, and coordinate academic extension activities. Their graduates work as teachers in public and private schools, other governmental institutions, and at the University of Panama itself. They are in charge of disseminating the knowledge of the humanities from the University to the rest of society.
Call for Proposals:
Because of this, the Schools of History, Anthropology and Cultural-Historical Tourism of the Department of History of the University of Panama undertakes its duty of organising a congress to celebrate an event of such importance for the Republic of Panama and for other regions of the world.
Therefore, these schools are pleased to call all researchers to send their proposals for presentations, symposiums, roundtables, posters, and any other activity of interest, in order to contribute to the understanding of the issues described above. In addition, it calls for any research that contributes to the study of the comparative, transnational and global History of Cities and of Latin American. In this way, it is expected to obtain a wider comprehension of the phenomena that have defined the past and present of Panama City and its local, regional and international entourage.
The Department of History also welcomes all studies that examine the evolution of Panama City within the Congress’ themes from a comparative, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspective. The proposals should, ideally, be based on recent, innovative, academic research, with an emphasis in any of the different branches of History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Sociology, Ethnic Studies, Heritage Studies, and Tourism Studies. However, this does not exclude works from other disciplines, including Architecture, Art, Geography, Economics, Law, Medicine and Science, and Engineering.
