Study at the Warburg

The Warburg Institute is one of the world’s leading centres for studying the interaction of ideas, images and society. It is dedicated to the survival and transmission of culture across time and space, with special emphasis on the afterlife of antiquity.

We run MA programmes in Art History, Curatorship and Renaissance Culture and in Cultural and in Intellectual and Visual History, and encourage MPhil and PhD applicants in the many areas of research the Institute supports. The resources of the Warburg are especially geared to students interested in interdisciplinary study.

Why study with us?

Students at the Warburg Institute have access to the best resources for academic study in London:

  • Unparalleled staff contact hours are combined with access to the Institute’s collections and open-stack Library, which is classified as one of the ‘20 Libraries that changed the world’*
  • Training in Latin and a European language which are essential for independent study and PhD research in our fields of research
  • Extensive opportunities for networking with an international community of scholars including academic staff, Fellows, Library readers and research project researchers, which significantly enriches the learning experience and can provide ideal connections for the future careers.
  • Access to a wealth of additional academic and cultural resources within the School of Advanced Study and the Knowledge Quarter hub of Bloomsbury.

Funding opportunities

We have a range of full fee bursaries available to both home/EU and international students and an excellent record in securing external funding for our MA and PhD applicants.

Investing in your future

Many Warburg MA alumni have gone on to pursue PhD study at the Institute or other Universities across the globe. MA and PhD graduates have also gone into positions at cultural institutions such as Sothebys, the Government Art Collection Arts Council England, the National Gallery, the V&A, and the Southbank Centre.

Join us to learn about the programmes we offer, meet our staff and current students, discover the Institute’s collections and find out what it’s like to study at the Warburg Institute.
