UP FROM A COTTON PATCH … REVISITED:

A Retrospective Seminar on the Development of Mississippi Valley State University

The Mississippi Valley State University’s current President, Dr. Jerryl Briggs Jr., has recommended a newly revised historical accounting that tells the story of the Mississippi Delta, the accomplishments, and the contributions MVSU made to its progress. As result, the book “Up from a Cotton Patch,” published in 1979, by Mrs. J.H. White has been targeted in this endeavor. The book, an autobiographical/historical novel about MVSU’s founder Dr. James Herbert White, who served as President from 1950-1972. A newly formed Committee/Editorial Board composed of several distinguished professors at MVSU evolved and determined an updated version of the book was in order. The working title for this project is “Up from the Cotton Patch … Revisited.”

The “Revisited” Editorial Board is thereby inviting all community members to participate in a retrospective seminar on the development of The Mississippi Valley State University. The inaugural seminar scheduled to be held Friday, September 27, 2019, in the Carver Randle Auditorium, (Social Sciences Building) on the MVSU campus. The collection of papers and interviews will be considered for a new updated publication of the same title, “Up from the Cotton Patch … Revisited.”

The call for papers, interviews and publication opportunities are open to all students, staff, faculty members, and community members-at-large. The themes (areas and scope) of the papers/interviews may include, but is not limited to: personal experiences at The Valley—personal observations of The Valley
