The Roosevelt Institute for American Studies (RIAS) is a research center and graduate school based in Middelburg, The Netherlands, dedicated to the study of American history, politics, and society. It is partnered with Leiden University. Since 2003, the Institute regularly hosts reseach seminars for doctoral students in American history and American studies. These seminars seek to create a relaxed, collegial setting for graduate students to present and sollicit feedback on their work, and to acquaint one another with their ongoing research. They are also a meeting-place for scholars throughout The Netherlands interested in the latest developments in the study of American history.

The RIAS will host its next seminar on 8-10 May 2019. We kindly invite applicatons from current PhD candidates whose research covers any aspect of U.S. culture, society, politics, or foreign relations. We welcome proposals for research papers (e.g. a dissertation chapter) or for papers that give an overview of the PhD projects in its entirety.

Participants will present their paper for 15 minutes. Each presentation is then followed by a group discussion of approximately 45 minutes, providing extensive opportunities for feedback.

Applicants are invited to submit their proposals, consisting of a 300-word abstract and a (condensed) CV, no later than Friday, 29 March 2019. These should be addressed to the seminar coordinator, Dr. Cees Heere, and sent to

The seminar works with pre-circulated papers. Participants will be expected to have a paper (approximately 7,500 words) ready for circulation by Friday, 26 April 2019.

The RIAS is happy to provide participants with accommodation and meals for the duration of the seminar.
