We are pleased to announce a call for applications for research fellowships at Wilson Special Collections Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's University Libraries. Of particular interest may be our new doctoral fellowship awards focused on the American South.

Please share the call for applications with your students and interested colleagues. Applications for all award programs are due February 15th.

The Wilson Special Collections Library is now accepting applications for two funding opportunities for researchers who wish to use the rich and deep resources available in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s special collections.

We are especially thrilled to launch our new Wilson Special Collections Library Doctoral Fellowship Program, which will offer two types of awards to advanced graduate students researching the American South:

  • Pre-Dissertation Prospectus Fellowship will allow doctoral students to explore Wilson Library to develop their dissertation proposals. This exploratory award will be granted for one month, and the research visit must take place during the summer research season, which extends from May 1 to September 1, 2019. Pre-Dissertation Prospectus Fellowships will be funded at $2,500 for one month.
  • Dissertation  Research Fellowship will support doctoral candidates whose dissertation project draws deeply and substantively on the Wilson Library. This research award will be granted for one, two, or three months depending upon demonstrated need to consult collection materials. The research visit must take place between May 1, 2019 and April 30, 2020. Dissertation Research Awards will be funded at $3,500 per month  for between one and three months of a research residency.

The 2019 Doctoral Fellowships are generously supported by the Watson-Brown Foundation.

Further details about this fellowship program, applicant eligibility, and the application process can be found on our Doctoral Fellowship page.

Wilson Library also invites applications for up to ten short-term summer research fellowships to support the intensive, innovative, and impactful research use of its collections.

Although most of our summer visiting awards support research on North Carolina and the American South, we are pleased to offer two additional opportunities this year:

For meaningful research engagement with the Rare Book Collection, in the amount of $1,250:

  • The Marjorie Bond Library Fund.

For the scholarly use of Wilson Library’s rich audiovisual collections, in the amount of $2,500:

  • The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation supports the Wilson Special Collections Library Audiovisual Research Fellowship.

Further details about this fellowship program, other funded research topics, applicant eligibility, and the application process can be found on our Summer Visiting Research Fellowship page.
