The Centre for Visual Arts and Culture and the Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme in Visual Culture presents the fourth in a series of Summer Schools which brings scholars together to explore the interdisciplinary nature of visual culture.  We welcome proposals from early career researchers working in a wide range of disciplines, including art, history, anthropology, philosophy, literary studies, archaeology, sociology, chemistry, physics and psychology, among others, whose work is connected to the study of visual phenomena.

We invite proposals for short contributions (maximum of 20 minutes in the form of presentations, demonstrations, participatory engagements or other presentation styles) on any aspect of visual culture, possible areas for enquiry include, but are not limited to:

  • Constructions of knowledge, identity and memories
  • Politics of visual culture
  • Materiality of vision
  • Landscapes and experiences
  • Visual research methodologies
  • Critical approaches to visual evidence
  • Curation and representation

Invited speakers include Dr Katy Barrett (Curator of Art Collections, Science Museum Group) and Prof Stephen Regan (Director of the Centre for Poetry and Poetics, Durham University). Presentations will be complemented by workshops aimed at enhancing visual research methodology skills. The event will also include a drinks reception at the Oriental Museum (https://www.dur.ac.uk/oriental.museum/) and there will be optional walking tours of Durham architecture and Durham Castle.
