Black Panther:
Taking Stock of the First African Super Hero at 50
The Department of English and Humanities at Shawnee State University and the Asian and African Studies at El Colegio de México invite scholars to submit 500 word abstracts on topics related to the character of the Black Panther in his various permutations in comic books and films for a two-day conference to be held April 19th and 20th, 2019 at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Interested scholars should send their abstract to BlackPantherConference2019@gmail.com by February 1st, 2019. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by March 1st, 2019. The abstract of 500 words should be accompanied by: 1) 3-5 keywords 2) Full name and professional title of scholar 3) Institutional affiliation 4) Brief Bio data of 200 words or less 5) Email contact
The conference organizers are also planning a co-edited volume for publication in English and Spanish in 2020 which will include a selection of the best papers presented at the Conference. Toward that end finalized papers of 8,000 words or less in MLA style need to be submitted electronically by May 30th, 2019. Presentations may approach the subject from a variety of theoretical and disciplinary trajectories including but not limited to: history, post-colonial studies, comparative literature, comics studies, cinema studies and cultural studies which serve to elucidate the myriad ways in which the Black Panther character has influenced popular and scholarly thought over the past half century.
