Publications are being accepted for nomination for the 2018 Hooks National Book Award, sponsored by the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change, at the University of Memphis. The annual book award recognizes a non-fiction book that best furthers understanding of the American Civil Rights Movement and its legacy. Books focusing on current civil rights and social justice issues are eligible. To be considered for the 2018 award, books must have a first-published date in 2018. A panel of judges, representing various higher education disciplines reviews the nominations and selects teh winning publication.
An award of $1,000 is presented to the winning author, at an award event at the University of Memphis in 2019. The winner must attend the event to accept the award and give a lecture about the book.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: Submit one copy of the nominated book, along with publisher information and full contact information (name, email address, mailing address and phone number) for BOTH the nominator and the book author. The book and contact information should be sent to Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change, University of Memphis, Attn: Ms. Rorie Trammel, 107 Scates Hall, Memphis, TN 38152. Submissions must be postmarked no later than 12/31/18.
