18 January, 2019

Queen Mary University of London

School of History

CFP Deadline Extended

The impact of World War II in shaping livelihood, governance and relationships on the African continent has been a subject of significant scholarly debate. Beyond the labour, primary resources and military service of Africans, the war initiated new political, social and economic dynamics that would have lasting effects.

The Second World War also redefined Africa’s status in the world. It fostered new relationships with those outside Africa, enunciated new ways of thinking and new cultural expressions within various societies through educational institutions and curriculum. Yet despite significant scholarly work on the impact of war in Africa, we still have much to learn about the dynamic of people’s lives in these years. This conference aims to examine how World War II shaped existence in African communities as well as emphasising the redefined relationship between most of African countries and the “Global North”. We welcome abstracts and submissions of 250 words to be submitted on or before 30thNovember 2018. The sub-themes to be examined include but are not limited to the following:

World War II and Conflict in African Cities

World War II and Decolonisation in Africa

Second World War and Urbanization in Africa

Women, livelihood and Sustenance in the war years

Changing Dynamics of African Cultures during, and after the War

Post-Second World War Politics in Africa

Post-Second World War Africa Economic Relations

Environment, Health care and Diseases in Post-World War II Africa

Conference registration, tea/coffee and lunch will be provided. We do have some limited funds for UK-based travel for participants.
