With apologies for cross-posting, I would like to announce the publication of my book Unbinding The Pillow Book: The Many Lives of a Japanese Classic (Columbia University Press, 2018).
In Unbinding The Pillow Book, I examine the reception history of The Pillow Book (Makura no sōshi, 11th c.) and the image of its author Sei Shōnagon from the seventeenth century to the present. Drawing on scholarly commentaries, erotic parodies, instruction manuals for women, high school textbooks, and comic books, I show how various ideologies have influenced the text and shaped interactions among its different versions.
