Indigenous Women of the Andes: New Approaches to Interdisciplinary Gender Studies
After almost four decades of academic scholarship we have come a long way in recovering indigenous women’s contributions to the Andean world in both the pre and post-invasion periods. From the well-known gender parallelism and complementarity approaches to a more nuanced use of sources, scholars of different fields have gradually put these women in their place. Yet, most of the produced scholarship about native women has been done in isolation or within the boundaries of each academic field. The present Call for Proposals for a panel at the 2019 RMCLAS meeting in Santa Fe, NM aims to advance a space for an interdisciplinary dialogue and exchange of the things we know or don’t know about indigenous women. We would like three additional panelists whose work engages any of the following topics:
- Native women’s literacy in non-textual areas (i.e. mining, accounting, mathematics, etc.)
- Female objects and spaces
- Marriage and polygamy meanings for women
- Women in ritual arts (music, singing, weaving, agriculture)
- Women as shrines or wak’as
- The female body and language production
- Indian women as rulers
- Other areas
The deadline to submit panel proposals is December 21, 2018. If interested in joining our panel, please submit a 250-word abstract of your proposed paper and a CV to sara.guengerich@ttu.eduor stellanair@g.ucla.edu.
