Graduate Conference at the

Faculty of Modern Languages of the Adam Mickiewicz University Poznań

"Translating as transcultural communication and social practice"

Poznań, 09.-10. May 2019

Call for papers

The cultural turn, which was initiated in the 1980s, shifted the focus of translation studies from the source text to the target text and extended the research interest from the linguistic level via the text level to the cultural dimension of translation. Relevant to research become such aspects as the cultural embedding of the translation, mechanisms of the mediation processes as well as culture-influenced reception conditions of translations.

Equally important is the social dimension of translation, that is, the focus on the social factors that determine the translation process, as well as the person of the translator as a transcultural and socially embedded subject. Research interests also include the interlinking of all these elements, with the institutional contexts in which translations take place. Translation studies thus gain a holistic perspective – they turn into “Sociotranslatology” (Risku).

These aspects and other questions entailed by the conceptualization of translation as a cultural and socially conditioned practice, we would like to debate during the cyclical Graduate Conference "Aspects of Literary Translation" held at the Faculty of Modern Languages at the Adam Mickiewicz University Poznań under the title "Translating as transcultural communication and social practice". The conference is supposed to be a forum for discussion of topics such as:

  • translational cultural competence ("competence-in-the-own-culture", "competence-in-the-foreign-culture")
  • Translational communication control ("the behavior-in-the-role-of-translator")
  • Extra-language reception conditions (communication situation, sociocultural circumstances, expectations of the recipients)
  • Translation as a bi-cultural process
  • The social dimension of translation
  • Functional conditions of translation markets
  • Conceptual linking of translation studies and other research disciplines regarding transcultural and social practices.

We cordially invite students and post-graduates and await your conference proposals. Invited are young scholars who work on translation theory (including the relation of translation theory and practice) at universities and other research  institutions and who are interested in exchanging ideas in an interdisciplinary context, contributing to new conceptualization of translation.
Welcome are theory-based proposals as well as case studies, considering translation practice from a synchronous and / or historical perspective.

„Übersetzen als transkulturelle Kommunikation und soziale Praxis“

Poznań, 09.-10. Mai 2019

Call for papers

„Przekład jako akt komunikacji transkulturowej i praktyka społeczna”

Poznań, 09 - 10 maja 2019

Call for papers

Zwrot kulturowy w badaniach nad przekładem skutkował przesunięciem perspektywy badawczej z obszaru analizy tekstu wyjściowego na kształtowanie, funkcję i recepcję tekstu w kulturze docelowej.

Główne zagadnienia tematyczne konferencji to:

  • kompetencja kulturowa tłumacza (bikulturowość tłumacza)
  • tłumacz jako kreator i uczestnik procesu komunikacji transkulturowej
  • tłumaczenie jako proces kulturotwórczy
  • przekład jako działanie i fakt społeczny
  • czynniki społeczne warunkujące proces przekładu
  • recepcja przekładu - aspekty pozajęzykowe
  • mechanizmy kształtujące lokalny i globalny rynek tłumaczeniowy
