The mission of the Schomburg's Lapidus Center for the Historical Analysis of Transatlantic Slavery is to generate and disseminate scholarly knowledge on the slave trade, slavery, and anti-slavery pertaining to the Atlantic World. The Center supports the work of researchers with short-term and long-term fellowships. 

Short-Term Fellowships

Scope

These fellowships aim to assist researchers in gaining access to collection materials at the Schomburg Center that are not readily available elsewhere. Fellowships are awarded for continuous periods of up to three months at the Lapidus Center with a stipend of $2,000/month.

Eligibility

The Fellowship Program is open to doctoral students, post-doctoral scholars, independent researchers, and artists studying the slave trade, slavery, abolition, and anti-slavery in the Atlantic World.

Only US citizens, permanent residents and foreign nationals who have been a resident in the United States for the three years immediately preceding the application deadline may apply. Applicants must reside outside of the New York metropolitan area.

Report

Each fellow is required to write a blog post of approximately 500 words to appear on nypl.org about his or her project and work completed at the Schomburg Center by the end of the award period.

  • Two letters of reference addressing the significance of the candidate’s work and his/her ability to fulfill the proposed work

Long-Term Fellowships

The Lapidus Center offers two six-month fellowships to assist scholars whose research on transatlantic slavery can benefit from extended access to the Schomburg Center’s resources.

Scope

The Lapidus residency program is designed to (1) encourage research and writing on the slave trade, slavery, and anti-slavery in the Atlantic world, (2) to promote and facilitate interaction among the participants including fellows funded by other sources, and (3) to facilitate the dissemination of the researchers’ findings through lectures, publications, and the ongoing Schomburg Center Colloquium and Seminar Series. Applicants must indicate in their proposal how they propose to use the resources of the Schomburg Center, including those of the Lapidus Center.

Eligibility

The Fellowship Program is open to post-doctoral scholars studying the slave trade, slavery, and anti-slavery in the Atlantic World.

Only U.S. citizens, permanent residents and foreign nationals who have been resident in the United States for the three years immediately preceding the application deadline may apply.

Stipends and Residency

Fellowships are awarded with a stipend of $30,000. Fellows are expected to be in continuous residence at the Schomburg Center and to participate in the intellectual life of the program. They must be devoted full time to their research projects and may not be employed during the period except sabbaticals from their own institutions.

Fellows will begin their residencies at the Center on September 3, 2019 and end on March 2, 2020.
