Home and Away: Imaginings and Experiences

American Conference for Irish Studies (ACIS) Southern Region Annual Meeting

The 2019 ACIS Southern region annual meeting will be held from January 31 to February 2, 2019, in historic Charleston, South Carolina, at the College of Charleston. The conference theme will explore how concepts of home and away have been imagined, created, lived, and resisted in Ireland and the Irish Diaspora, past and present, from a gendered perspective. Proposals from various fields, including literature, art, history, film, folklore, anthropology, cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies, and more are welcome. In the wake of #metoo, the repeal of the Eighth Amendment, and the attention on current migration policies, we especially welcome proposals focusing on race or ethnicity, gender, and sexuality.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

  • Moving and movement
  • Travel
  • Migrations
  • Immigrant populations
  • Returning emigrants and re-entry
  • The idea of “home”
  • Home life and domesticity
  • Alienation and exile

Paper andpanel submissions (3-4 participants) are welcome, as are proposals for live performances, dramatic readings, poster presentations, or exhibits. Individual proposals should be 250- 500 words in length and should include a brief biographical statement for the submitter (50 words). Please submit via the online submission site,,by October 31, 2018.
