The International Committee for Museology (ICOFOM) and Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) are pleased to announce that on online “Defining the Museum of the 21st Century” symposium will be held on Friday, September 14, 2018. ICOFOM’s goal is to construct a global definition of "museum" and is hosting a series of symposia around the world in pursuit of that goal. This particular symposium will explore the theme "Evolving Multiculturalism in Museums in the United States." This symposium will provide American museum specialists the opportunity to contribute their ideas to this museum definition project. We welcome everybody to participate.

The symposium will host panels on three themes:

  • Nation-Building in Museums in the United States
  • Collecting Tangible and Intangible Heritage in Museums in the United States
  • Serving Nearby Heritage for All in Museums in the United States

Registration is free and open to everybody. The symposium will be online and viewers will have the opportunity to ask questions of the speakers and submit their comments on this attempt to build a global definition of "museum." The symposium program is available here. We look forward to a robust discussion!
