Tentative Title: Representing African Indigenous Knowledge
Background
Indigenous knowledge(IK) is an important area of academic discourse that focuses on the ways of knowing, thinking and seeing that are passed down orally from generation to generation. Indigenous knowledge is embedded in community practices, institutions, relationships and rituals. Although, IK has significant value in human development, it has remained neglected and under-utilized for years in the global South especially in Africa. The reason for this devaluation is linked to colonialism and Eurocentric view which attempt to represent indigenous knowledge as being backward, unscientific, archaic and unworthy of scholarly engagement.
Mainstreaming indigenous knowledge in developmental process will strengthen cultural identity and enhance its use in achieving socio-economic development goals, such as sustainable agriculture, natural resource management, affordable and appropriate technology etc.
This book project seeks to reclaim and represent Africa's indigenous ways of knowing and to underscore her contributions and place in the global space of public knowledge production, and to challenge past and present misinformation and prejudice about African Indigenous knowledge system. We therefore invite original manuscript contributions in the form of chapters from researchers, scientists, policy makers, experts, practitioners, in the domain of interests from around the globe.
