A Basque-Mi’kmaw Cultural Exchange Symposium

Thursday, 27 September 2018 and Friday, 28 September 2018

09:00 – 17:00

In the fall of 2018, Stephen Augustine, Hereditary Chief on the Mi’kmaq Grand Council and Associate Vice-President, Indigenous Affairs and Unama’ki College, at Cape Breton University (CBU), will host 70 international delegates, including 26 speakers who are world-class experts in their field, in Cape Breton for a week-long symposium that will explore ancient and modern connections between Basque and Mi’kmaw peoples.

The geographic area of research of this symposium is Eastern Canada (specifically Mi’kmaw territory) and its ancient transatlantic connections with Western seaboard cultures of Europe — including Basque, Irish, Welsh, and Scots.
