These events celebrate Marsha Haufler on the occasion of her retirement. Prior to her arrival at the University of Kansas, Professor Haufler was already at the forefront of Chinese art historical research; she co-curated pioneering exhibitions focusing on women artists, Views from Jade Terrace: Chinese Women Artists, 1300-1912 and Flowering in the Shadows: Women in the History of Chinese and Japanese Painting. During her twenty-six distinguished years at the University of Kansas, Professor Haufler has contributed advanced pedagogy, scholarly research, publications, and exhibitions of Chinese art. Upon her arrival, Professor Haufler brought to the university the acclaimed exhibition Latter Days of the Law: Images of Chinese Buddhism, 850-1850 and the accompanying international symposium. As the editor and a contributor of Cultural Intersections in Later Chinese Buddhism, she has greatly advanced the study of Chinese Buddhist art. To embrace the greater area of Asian art studies, Professor Haufler played an instrumental role in launching the Korean art studies program and helped establish a tenure-track teaching position at the university. In addition, Professor Haufler steered programs and activities at the Center for East Asian Studies while serving as Director, and as Associate Dean for the Center for Global and International Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Among her outstanding external contributions, Professor Haufler served as the editor of the journal Archives of Asian Art.
