Call for papers for panel at the Northeast Modern Language Association conference on April 12-15, 2018 in Pittsburgh, PA.

Urban Spaces and Practices in Latin America

This panel considers the different ways in which spatial imaginaries and practices have evolved over time in order to account for the urban experience in Latin America. Whether viewed geographically, ideologically, symbolically, or metaphorically, the space of the city has provided a lens through which to understand many of the region’s historical, political, and cultural processes. With the advent of new technologies of production, transportation, and communication, Latin Americans have inhabited, experienced and interacted with urban spaces in increasingly complex and ambivalent ways. This panel welcomes papers that explore how existing and imagined cities address these changes in the region’s steadily expanding urban spaces. Questions?
