This special issue will be guest-edited by artist Cliff Notez, an award-winning poet, director, and musician. Black Mental He[ART] is a project inspired by Cliff Notez' latest film, Vitiligo. The film, directed, written and scored by Cliff is a short Psychological-Thriller tackling topics like Racism, Media, Self Care and how they all correlate with Public Health topics like trauma and mental health. In this issue we want artists to respond to trauma and mental health and how racism, and media play a role in this. If artist wish to respond directly to the film please email HipStoryFilms@gmail.com. We encourage writers, directors, musicians, artists, filmmakers and artists (especially people of color) to submit work that can relate or expand on this pressing, and often times overlooked, topic. We are seeking the following:

  • Poetry (send no more than 4 poems, 8 pages max)
  • Music (MP3 Format, no more than 15 Minutes Total)
  • Stories, Articles, Essays & Drama (2500 words max)
  • Visual art/Photography (no more than 5 images, 300 resolution, jpeg)
  • Video (no more than 15 Minutes, 1920x1080, MP4)

Along with your submission, we would like the following:

  • A short artist statement (500 words max) about how your artwork relates to the film and, more importantly, it's topical subject matter.
  • Your bio statement

Only submit work that has not been published before, in print and/or online directly to the guest-editor. Send your submission as a word document attachment. Make sure your name and email appear on every page. Please put (PFSubmission) in subject box. All submissions will be acknowledged via email. Kindly contact the guest-editor via email if you have any questions or if you do not receive an acknowledgment of your submission.
