The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, Member of the Leibniz Association, makes a biennial research award, sponsored by the Braunschweig-based educational publisher Westermann, for excellence in academic work in the field of international research into educational media. The award, next due to be made in 2018, is for academic work which engages with aspects of textbooks and other educational media used in schools which relate to cultural, political or didactical issues, learning theory approaches, educational practice or the sociology of knowledge.

RESEARCH AWARD

The award is given in recognition of outstanding monographs, doctoral theses or post-doctoral work such as Habilitation theses, and edited volumes; the editors are the recipients in the latter case. Candidates for the award may put themselves forward or be nominated by others. Works in German or English, which are as yet unpublished or whose publication took place no earlier than 1 January 2015, are eligible for the award.

The award is endowed with 5,000 euro, 2,500 euro of which comprises printing costs for the publication of the work in the GEI’s book series Eckert. Die Schriftenreihe. Studien des Georg-Eckert-Instituts zur internationalen Bildungsmedienforschung (Eckert. The book series. Studies by the Georg Eckert Institute on research findings in international educational media), published by V&R unipress of Göttingen. If the work has already been published, the part of the award intended for printing expenses may instead be granted as a scholarship for the conduction of research at the Georg Eckert Institute or used to subsidise a conference. The award may be shared among more than one winner if this is felt to be appropriate.

AWARD FOR YOUNG ACADEMICS

The Georg Eckert Institute funds a special award for young academics, worth 500 euro and aimed at dissertations for first degrees (MA, Staatsexamen, Diplom) gained not earlier than 1 January 2015. Bachelor’s dissertations are not eligible. Candidates or nominees for the award should submit their work together with two assessments from the candidate’s supervisors or other specialists in the field. The award winner will receive the opportunity to publish his or her work online on Edumeres.net, the Institute’s specialist information portal for research into educational media.

THE JURY

An independent panel of international respected academics will select the winning entry or entries. There is no right of legal appeal against the panel’s decision. The award ceremony will take place in the autumn of 2018. If you have any questions on the award, please send an email to forschungspreis@gei.de or call +49 (0)531/59099-331.

The closing date for applications and nominations for both awards is 30 September 2017
