Overview:
At no time since the signing of the Peace Treaty and the Security Treaty in San Francisco in 1951 has Japan faced an American leader comparable to Donald Trump. Even the Nixon Shocks pale in comparison to the challenge which President Trump’s vision of the international order and America’s global pose to Japan. Our panel of distinguished experts will discuss Japan’s response to the new United States and answer the audience’s questions.

Speakers:
Hiroyuki Akita is a Commentator at the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. He held senior positions as a correspondent in Beijing, Washington DC, and was Leader Writer at the Financial Times. He holds a BA from Jiyu Gakuen, an MA from Boston University in International Relations and was an Associate at the Program on US-Japan Relations at Harvard University. He is the author of 「暗流 米中日外交三国志」(Anryu—the Diplomatic Competition between US-Japan and China(2008), 「日米中 外交戦の裏側」(Behind the Scene of the Power Game by US-China-Japan (2013) Digital Edition, Nihon Keizai Shimbun Publishing Co. and 「乱流 米中日安全保障三国志」Ranryu- the Future of the Strategic Competition of US-China and its Impact on the Asian Pacific, (2016).

Glen S. Fukushima is a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, a Washington, D.C. think tank, where he focuses on U.S. policy toward Asia. He has had a career in academia, law, government, and business, including as Director for Japanese Affairs (1985-88) and Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Japan and China (1988-90) at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) in Washington, D.C. He was also based in Asia for more than 20 years as a senior executive at one European and four American multinational corporations and was elected for two terms as President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ). In 1993, he declined an offer to be Assistant Secretary of Commerce for International Economic Policy, and in 2015-16, he served on Hillary Clinton’s Asia Policy Working Group. He was educated in the U.S. at Stanford and Harvard and in Japan at Keio and Tokyo University, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.

Jun Okumura went straight from school to what is now the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. After thirty years in its ecosystem, though, it dawned on him that he had no aptitude whatsoever for administration and/or management. Armed with this epiphany, he went to the authorities and arranged an amicable separation. He currently holds the titles of “visiting researcher” at the Meiji Institute for Global Affairs (MIGA). Along the way, he has been associated with the Manufactured Imports and Investment Promotion Organization (MIPRO), the Eurasia Group and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He is a graduate of the Law Faculty of Tokyo University and holds an LLM from Harvard Law School.
