Subject Fields
Humanities, Intellectual History, Colonial and Post-Colonial History / Studies, British History / Studies, Art, Art History & Visual Studies

Following on from a successful interdisciplinary arts and humanities conference held at the University of York (17th-18th March 2017) and subsequent interest from a major academic publisher, contributions are being sought for an edited volume.

Several chapters are already confirmed and a noted academic in the field has agreed to provide a foreword, amongst other input.

The book is to be based around the theme of ‘consuming animals’ in the period c.1700-1900. In essence, it seeks to investigate the various, and often ambiguous, ways in which animals were consumed by humans both materially and symbolically. In particular, it focuses on the violent and exploitative elements of human-animal relationships, the place of these within broader systems and structures of power (e.g. natural/social hierarchies, patriarchy, capitalism, imperialism) as well as historical and contemporary critiques of such relationships, systems and structures.

Topics/themes may include:

Violence and Killing

Food, Diet, Meat-Eating, Vegetarianism/Veganism

Hunting

Commodification, Material Use of Animals

Imperialism

Science, Vivisection

Animal Rights and Animal Welfare

Confinement and Exhibition

Art and Literature

Gender, Race, Religion, Sexuality and Class

Contributions are welcome from any arts and humanities discipline for chapters of around 8,000 words. Please send abstracts of 500-800 words along with a brief bio to snd505@york.ac.uk by Monday 10th July 2017.
