As the editor of the two-volume World of Jim Crow: A Daily Life Encyclopedia (forthcoming from Greenwood Press), I would like to invite experts in African American history to contribute to this collaborative, scholarly endeavor.

This two-volume title will feature more than 200 thematically arranged encyclopedia entries covering the social, political, and material culture of the United States during the Jim Crow Era. What was everyday life really like for ordinary African Americans in the Jim Crow South? What did they eat, wear, believe, and think? How did they raise their children? How did they interact with government? What did they value? What forms of entertainment and recreation did they seek and create? Supported by the most current research, this latest reference work in Greenwood's Daily Life series will explore these and other questions about the lives of ordinary people. In addition to providing a starting point for information and research, the encyclopedia will also draw upon the expertise of leading scholars from multiple academic disciplines to craft entries that incorporate the interpretations and insights of recent scholarship.

Scholars of all ranks, including advanced graduate students, interested in lending their expertise this project by contributing one or more entries should contact Steven Reich (reichsa@jmu.edu) for a complete entry list.

  • Entries range in length from 750 to 2000 words
  • Completed entries would be due in the autumn of 2017
  • Entries must conform to Greenwood's Guidelines for Contributors
  • Modest honoraria are available to scholars who contribute multiple entries.
