5th International Summer School

Governance, Conflict and Peace Building

3-14 September 2018

Department of Political Science, University of Peshawar

&

Hanns Seidel Foundation, Islamabad.

Theme and Purpose:

Conflicts have been pervasive throughout human history. The deep-rooted consequences of such conflicts have inspired scholars and policy makers to delineate and understand related phenomena more closely. The inquiries into conflict dynamics have led to the emergence of newer theories and concepts of ‘Conflict Transformation’ and ‘Peace Building.’ Academic disciplines increasingly employ interdisciplinary approaches to the study of conflict management and transformation. The latter suggests fundamental structural changes in the society, economy, and the polity. Governance as a process is primarily concerned with these structural changes. Therefore, the political success of conflict transformation critically depends on how the capacity of state institutions is built to deliver services efficiently. The vibrancy of civil society is another important factor. There is a need not only to comprehend such contentious issues, but also to devise strategies for more successful confidence building and conflict transformation in the South and Central Asian region. The summer school intends to serve as a platform from which a better understanding is generated and strides are made towards peace and cooperation in South and Central Asia.

APPROACH

The approach of the program is interactive, and participants are expected to learn not only from the resource persons but also from each other by sharing their own experiences. Along with the academic sessions, visits to government and non-government institutions, group meals, cultural nights and sightseeing ventures are also part of the programme. Participants of the Summer School will participate actively in the 7th HSF-UoP International Conference titled ‘The Dynamics of Change in the Pakistan-Afghanistan Region: Politics, (Dis)integration and Reformation in the Borderland’
