The Newberry Seminar in Labor History

2017-2018 Academic Year CALL FOR PROPOSALS ---  SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JUNE 15th, 2017

This seminar provides a forum for works-in-progress that explore the history of working class people, communities, and culture; class and state policy; unions and popular political movements; and other related topics. We are particularly interested in works that deal with gender, sexuality, race, migration, and the social history of work. Our focus has been on U.S. history, but we welcome papers on North America generally, and on transnational aspects of labor history.

The seminar is open to graduate students, faculty members and independent scholars. Graduate students and junior faculty in the early-writing stages who wish to present work are especially encouraged to apply. To maximize time for discussion, papers are circulated electronically in advance. Priority is given to individuals who are at a stage of their research at which they can best benefit from feedback.

The seminar meets on selected Fridays during the academic year, from 3-5 pm. All meetings take place at the Newberry Library in Chicago, Illinois. To submit a proposal, please visit our webform at newberry.org/scholl and upload a one-page proposal, a statement explaining the relationship of the paper to your other work, and a brief CV. Applications will not be accepted via email.   Submission webform is here: https://www.newberry.org/newberry-seminar-labor-history

If you are not at present interested in giving a paper but want to receive papers and participate in the discussion, please read our Registration Information found online. The Newberry is unable to provide funds for travel or lodging for other presenters, but can assist in locating discounted accommodations. For further information about Newberry seminars, please email scholl@newberry.org.

The seminar’s co-sponsors are the history departments of DePaul University, Northern Illinois University, Northwestern University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, The Karla Scherer Center for the Study of American Culture at the University of Chicago, the Department of History and Political Science at Purdue University Calumet, the Roosevelt University Department of History and LABOR: Studies in Working-Class History of the Americas.
