Call for Articles: Special Issue ‘Woman Suffrage’

It is incredible to me that any woman should consider the fight for full equality won. It has just begun. There is hardly a field, economic or political, in which the natural and unaccustomed policy is not to ignore women … Unless women are prepared to fight politically they must be content to be ignored politically.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Alice Paul (1920)

The editorial board of DEP: Deportate, esuli, profughe / Deportees, Exiles, Refugees welcomes submissions for a Special Issue edition, entitled ‘1918 and Beyond: New Votes, New Voices? – Retrospectives, Assessments, Outlooks’ and commemorating the centenary of women’s suffrage in numerous states.

The year 1918 was significant and imperative, not simply because of the end of the First World War, but also because of the pertinent legal paradigm shift in many nations, implementing the franchise for female citizens. Palpably, this historic event is much too often eclipsed, due to the multiple ceasefires and peace treaties, plus the aftermath of interwar phenomena, such as revolutions and paramilitary violence, the rise of fascism, or the Great Depression. Furthermore, newly accessed public spheres for women and de jure gender equality at the ballot did not automatically have a practical manifestation, and the electoral alterations or the emancipatory milestone of achieving the right to vote were not necessarily mirrored in de facto social or economic conditions and infrastructures.

DEP invites transdisciplinary approaches to and perspectives of these topics and themes, as well as contrastive analyses, interfacing narratives, aspects, and historiographies from diverse countries. Proposals by graduate students and postdoctoral or early career researchers are particularly encouraged.

DEP (Ca' Foscari University of Venice), published since 2004, is an online journal, pertaining to objectives and studies of women’s memory. For more information and additional details regarding style and format, please visit
