Nouveau Reach. Luxury in Canada.
From Thursday May 11 to Saturday May 13 2017, Nouveau Reach, the first-ever Canadian conference focussing on Critical Luxury will be held at Ryerson University’s School of Fashion. Co-organized by professors Alison Matthews David, Robert Ott (Ryerson University), Jessica Clark and Nigel Lezama (Brock University), this stimulating event will gather the world’s leading fashion and luxury researchers and local Toronto makers to discuss the changing meanings of luxury in the Canadian context.
Sponsored in part by Parfums Christian Dior Canada (LVMH), Henkell & Co., the Design Exchange, and the Bata Shoe Museum, the conference will feature eleven panels on topics ranging from making luxury in Canada, the creation of a Canadian luxury public space, the relationship between the art world and luxury brands, a study of Comrags’ luxury codes, and a host of discussions of luxury in its many forms: design, craft, high tech, and fashion.
Nouveau Reach will also shine a spotlight on three renowned authors. Jonathan Faiers (Tartan, Dressing Dangerously: Dysfunctional Fashion in Film), Giorgio Riello (Luxury. A Rich History, Cotton: The Fabric that Made the Modern World), and Jana Scholze (co-curator of the acclaimed “What Is Luxury? V&A show, in London, England) will engage the public with a daily keynote lecture.
