Upstarts on the Amazon: South American Colonies in the History of the English and Dutch Empires

 

This is a chapter-in-progress from her book manuscript, which examines how the English and Dutch established empires in the Americas. It considers how short-lived colonies, illicit trading, and piracy contributed to their permanent colonies. It especially looks at the role of tobacco trade and cultivation in those activities.
